Strength of Materials: Stress to Strain Conversion

Stress to Strain Conversion

It is also possible to calculate strain in one direction when there is stresses in multiple directions by using equations 1-6.

Multiple direction normal stress to x direction normal strain (1)

ε = Normal Strain

σ = Normal Stress

E = Youngs Modulus

ν = Poissons Ratio

Multiple direction normal stress to y direction normal strain (2)

Multiple direction normal stress to z direction normal strain (3)

Multiple direction shear stress to xy direction shear strain (4)

γ = Shear Strain

τ = Shear Stress

G = Shear Modulus

Multiple direction shear stress to xz direction shear strain (5)

Multiple direction shear stress to yz direction shear strain (6)

The same principles discussed here will apply when dealing strains in multiple directions.
